In the heart of Somerville, a group of high school friends has transformed their shared love for music into an art punk phenomenon. Known as sidebody, this band is carving out its niche with quirky charm and unfiltered authenticity. Their recently released single "No Commercial Enterprise" humorously highlights local radio stations, while showcasing their unconventional approach to songwriting. Originating from a disagreement about promotional strategies during a 2021 PorchFest event, the track encapsulates the band's playful nature. Formed during the pandemic, sidebody thrives on experimentation, switching instruments mid-song, and creating memorable live performances. Having opened for renowned artist Maggie Rogers, they are now set to make waves at the Boston Calling Music Festival.

Sidebody's journey began during the pandemic when Lena Warnke, Hava Horowitz, and Martha Schnee started gathering weekly in Horowitz’s mother’s garage. Despite limited formal musical training, they embraced improvisation, inspired by a collection of instruments gathered by Horowitz’s father. This spirit of exploration continues to define them, as each member takes turns experimenting with different roles within the band. Their unique approach not only adds depth to their sound but also reflects their commitment to breaking traditional boundaries in music creation.

The band’s formation evolved organically. Cara Giaimo joined after filling in for Warnke at a small gig, impressing everyone with her dedication and talent. This performance caught the attention of Grammy-nominated singer Maggie Rogers, leading to an invitation to open for her at Paradise Rock Club. The experience was transformative, pushing the band to elevate their music and solidify their identity. “It was one of those moments where you realize someone believes in your potential,” shares Horowitz, highlighting the impact of such recognition.

Beyond music, sidebody extends their creativity through various artistic endeavors. They operate a printing press and produce zines, blending literature and visual arts. Their studio serves as both a creative hub and a living archive, adorned with personal mementos like a scaled-down blimp and handwritten notes from admirers such as Maggie Rogers. These elements underscore the band's holistic approach to artistry, emphasizing community and self-expression.

As sidebody gears up for their debut at Boston Calling, they bring more than just music to the stage. Their songs resonate with honesty and raw emotion, reflecting the diverse personalities of the band members. Through their work, sidebody encourages others to embrace creativity fearlessly, proving that even beginners can create something extraordinary. Their upcoming performance promises to captivate audiences with the same whimsical energy that has defined their career thus far.

The hit, which previously topped the Billboard Global 200, ranks second in the history of the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for most weeks at No. 1, trailing only Bruno Mars and Blackpink’s Rosé's collaboration "Apt." with 19 weeks. Despite being dethroned, "Die With a Smile" is likely to remain in the top 10 for several months.
