BHP, a leading global resources company, has partnered with SiTration, a technology firm spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), to implement an innovative copper recovery solution. This collaboration focuses on extracting copper from water sources at legacy mining sites, addressing both environmental concerns and the growing demand for this critical metal. The project is set to commence with pilot programs at BHP's site in the Globe-Miami district of Arizona, an area rich in mining history.

This pioneering venture signifies a significant step towards sustainable resource management and bolstering domestic supply chains for essential metals. The technology, developed by SiTration, offers a method to recover valuable copper without the use of harsh chemicals, thereby minimizing environmental impact. By revitalizing resources from disused mining areas, the partnership aims to contribute to a circular economy in the mining sector.

Pilot Programs for Copper Extraction

BHP and SiTration are embarking on two pilot programs in Arizona to recover copper from water at the historic Copper Cities site. The initial phase involves a short-term, small-scale trial to evaluate the technology's effectiveness. Following successful preliminary results, a larger deployment is planned to produce commercial-grade copper cathodes, demonstrating the potential for significant domestic copper production and resource utilization from existing mining waste.

The pilot programs at the Copper Cities site are strategically designed to test SiTration's innovative copper recovery technology under real-world conditions. Initially, a month-long small-scale trial will assess the system's efficiency in extracting copper from legacy mining water. If successful, this will lead to an expanded, two-month deployment targeting the production of up to two tonnes of commercial-grade copper cathodes. This phased approach allows for thorough evaluation and optimization, with the ultimate goal of establishing a viable and sustainable method for domestic copper production from historical mining resources. This initiative underscores a commitment to resource recovery and environmental stewardship in the mining industry.

Advancing Sustainable Copper Production

The collaboration between BHP and SiTration aims to establish a new paradigm for copper production, focusing on sustainability and resource efficiency. By recovering copper from mining-impacted water, the project not only taps into previously inaccessible reserves but also mitigates environmental footprints associated with traditional mining. This approach is particularly timely given the projected surge in global copper demand, driven by the expansion of energy infrastructure and data centers, highlighting the importance of innovative solutions for securing future metal supplies.

This partnership between BHP and SiTration is poised to redefine copper production through sustainable practices. The process developed by SiTration avoids the use of chemicals and generates no new waste products, marking a significant environmental improvement over conventional methods. Furthermore, bench-scale tests have already demonstrated the technology's ability to produce LME Grade A copper with remarkably low energy consumption (3–4kW-hours per kilogram), even from diluted legacy mining water. This energy efficiency, coupled with the potential to extract billions of dollars' worth of copper from the American Southwest's legacy mining waters, positions this initiative as a critical step towards meeting the anticipated 70% growth in global copper demand by 2050, bolstering domestic supply chains, and setting a new standard for responsible resource management.
