Bitcoin ETFs: Navigating the Volatility with BTCI and XBCI

In early January of this year, I re-evaluated the NEOS Bitcoin High Income ETF (BTCI), adjusting its rating to a 'Hold'. This decision was not based on any fundamental change in the ETF's operational mechanics, but rather stemmed from a shift in its expected performance trajectory. My assessment indicated that the fund's income potential had become minimal, and the broader outlook for Bitcoin lacked strong, immediate catalysts for significant upward movement. This cautious stance reflects a prudent approach to digital asset investments during periods of market uncertainty.

Expanding on this cautious outlook, the NEOS Boosted Bitcoin High Income ETF (XBCI) receives a 'Sell' rating. This classification is primarily due to its amplified exposure to downside risks, making it a precarious choice unless there is a firm conviction of an imminent, robust Bitcoin rally. In contrast, BTCI emerges as the more favorable option, particularly during market phases characterized by stability or downward pressure. It offers a modest income stream without significantly exacerbating potential losses. XBCI's structure means it only outperforms in scenarios of strong and rapid market advancement, which currently appears unlikely given prevailing market conditions. Recent trends indicate that inflows into Bitcoin ETFs have turned negative, further diminishing prospects for a swift rebound in Bitcoin's value. Coupled with an unsupportive macroeconomic environment, the likelihood of a near-term recovery in Bitcoin's price is considerably reduced, reinforcing the preference for more conservative investment strategies.

Given the current market dynamics, a discerning investment strategy in Bitcoin-related ETFs requires careful consideration of both risk and potential return. The preference for BTCI over XBCI highlights a broader principle: in volatile or uncertain markets, capital preservation and measured income generation often take precedence over speculative high-growth potential. Investors should prioritize understanding the underlying market conditions and select instruments that align with a realistic assessment of future performance, rather than chasing amplified returns that come with disproportionate risks. Embracing a well-informed and disciplined approach is crucial for navigating the complexities of the cryptocurrency investment landscape.

InterDigital: A Strong Business Facing Valuation Challenges
InterDigital, Inc. (IDCC) is currently rated as a 'Hold' due to its fair valuation, despite strong underlying business fundamentals. The company's Q1 results showed positive Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) growth and successful licensing agreements, but a significant portion (31%) of revenue was from one-time 'catch-up' payments, raising questions about long-term sustainability. A discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis suggests a potential 7% downside from its current stock price, with upside contingent on growth in consumer electronics, IoT, and automotive sectors, and converting video services litigation into recurring revenue. The current market price already reflects an optimistic growth outlook.
