“CBS Evening News” is grappling with a significant viewership decline, as the program's audience has once again fallen below the critical 4 million threshold. This drop has reignited concerns within the news division, reminiscent of previous struggles that led to an overhaul of the show. Despite anchor Tony Dokoupil’s recent energetic start and prominent field reporting, the program continues to lag behind its rivals in the highly competitive evening news landscape, particularly in the advertiser-coveted demographic.

“CBS Evening News” Experiences Notable Ratings Decline After Tony Dokoupil's Adventurous Start

In mid-March 2026, precisely for the five-day period concluding on March 13th, the esteemed “CBS Evening News,” helmed by the intrepid Tony Dokoupil, recorded a total viewership of approximately 3.83 million individuals. This figure notably includes merely 468,000 viewers within the crucial 25-to-54 age demographic, a segment highly prized by advertisers. This performance starkly contrasts with the robust numbers of its competitors: ABC’s “World News Tonight” garnered an impressive average of nearly 8.48 million overall viewers and 1.03 million in the key demographic, while NBC’s “NBC Nightly News” attracted 6.51 million total viewers and 946,000 within the same demographic during the identical period.

This recent dip in viewership harks back to previous challenging times for CBS News, which had, in the past, restructured the “CBS Evening News” program, moving away from anchors Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson, largely due to similar declines below the 4 million viewer mark. The strategic decision to appoint Dokoupil, who previously distinguished himself as a co-anchor on “CBS Mornings” and gained recognition from former CBS News President Susan Zirinsky and current Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss for his engaging features and incisive interviews, was made with the explicit intention of revitalizing the program and closing the gap with rival broadcasts. His initial five-day tenure, spanning January 5th to January 9th, saw promising figures, averaging nearly 4.17 million viewers, and even peaking at 4.6 million in a subsequent week.

Dokoupil's commitment to immersive journalism was further highlighted by his extensive travels, including reporting from the Middle East during the burgeoning conflict between Iran, the U.S., and Israel. He was notably the only anchor among the major evening news programs to report so closely from the heart of the geopolitical tensions. However, despite these efforts and the initial positive reception, the latest Nielsen data reveals a disheartening 15% reduction in viewership within the 25-to-54 demographic quarter-to-date, compared to the previous year. In contrast, “NBC Nightly News” experienced an 8% increase in this demographic, while “World News Tonight” saw a modest 4% decline. While CBS News executives attribute some of the fluctuations to the recent shift to Daylight Saving Time, internal analyses also indicate a 7% increase in overall viewers and a 10% rise in the 25-to-54 demographic when compared to the average viewership of the current season thus far.

The persistent challenge faced by “CBS Evening News” underscores the intensely competitive landscape of broadcast journalism. Despite the dynamic and engaging presence of its new anchor, Tony Dokoupil, and his commendable efforts in reporting from global hotspots, the program continues to struggle in consistently capturing and retaining a broad audience. This situation highlights the evolving nature of news consumption and the difficulties traditional evening broadcasts encounter in a fragmented media environment. Moving forward, CBS News will need to critically evaluate its strategies to ensure not only compelling content but also effective ways to reach and resonate with contemporary viewers, particularly the younger demographic crucial for long-term sustainability. The question remains whether innovative journalistic approaches and anchor personalities can reverse these trends, or if deeper structural shifts in news delivery are required to regain a leading position.
