The Siskiyou Music Project (SMP) has announced an exciting lineup for its 2025 season, featuring renowned artists from around the world. Kicking off with a sold-out performance by the Affinity Trio at the Old Siskiyou Barn on April 26, the series continues to bring jazz enthusiasts a diverse range of musical experiences. Highlights include solo performances by Mimi Fox, the vibrant sounds of the Marcos Silva Quintet, and the Southern Oregon debut of South African guitarist Derek Gripper. Under the artistic direction of Ed Dunsavage, this season promises to deliver unforgettable evenings filled with global influences in guitar-driven jazz.
On May 25, the "Jazz in the Vineyard" series begins at Grizzly Peak Winery with a solo concert by Mimi Fox, celebrated as one of the most accomplished jazz guitarists today. Known for her versatility across acoustic and electric guitars, Fox has performed alongside some of jazz's greatest legends. Her international acclaim spans prestigious festivals such as Montreal and Newport Jazz Festivals, where she captivated audiences worldwide. Guitar Player Magazine praised her profound artistry, noting that it stems from years of dedication to her craft.
Following Fox's performance, the stage will heat up further on June 29 when the Marcos Silva Quintet takes over. A Grammy-nominated artist based in the Bay Area, Silva brings his signature Brazilian jazz fusion sound to Ashland. With extensive experience as music director for Flora Purim and Airto Moreira, Silva combines bold original compositions with timeless standards. Accompanied by Seth Burrows on guitar, Andrew Lion on bass, Idit Shner on saxophone, and Zach Mondlick on drums, the quintet is set to create an electrifying evening under the stars.
In July, SMP welcomes Derek Gripper, a groundbreaking South African guitarist making his Southern Oregon debut. Classically trained, Gripper gained international recognition through his innovative interpretations of kora music on guitar. The kora, a West African harp-lute hybrid traditionally boasting 23 strings, inspired Gripper’s critically acclaimed album One Night on Earth. Renowned classical guitarist John Williams expressed astonishment at Gripper’s ability to replicate complex kora pieces single-handedly, while kora master Toumani Diabaté sought confirmation about the authenticity of his work.
This remarkable season marks the continuation of SMP’s mission to bring world-class performances to Southern Oregon. Founded in 2001, the organization thrives under the leadership of Ed Dunsavage, who remains committed despite managing long-term health challenges due to long COVID.
