Founded in 2021 at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Local Mojo has now expanded its reach to Northwestern through the efforts of Weinberg sophomore Jack Hartfelder. This student-led movement seeks to foster a more cohesive and inclusive musical community by organizing events and connecting artists with venues. Unlike other campus organizations, Local Mojo operates independently and aims to serve as a central hub for all things music-related on campus.
A New Chapter in Evanston's Music Scene

In the crisp autumn of 2024, drummer Jack Hartfelder recognized this potential and introduced a chapter of Local Mojo to unite musicians and enthusiasts alike. Established originally at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 2021, Local Mojo is a national entertainment brand that promotes grassroots music communities by connecting performers, audiences, and venues.
Hartfelder envisioned Local Mojo as a unifying force within Northwestern’s diverse musical landscape. Unlike traditional organizations such as WNUR or Mayfest Productions, which focus on specific genres or formats, Local Mojo strives to create a centralized platform for all musicians and fans. Operating outside the formal structures of Student Organizations and Activities, it organizes its own events while promoting those hosted by other groups.
Since its inception earlier this year, Local Mojo NU has already made significant strides. Among its accomplishments is the Boiler Room-style event held on April 10, where three student DJs transformed an off-campus basement into an immersive musical experience reminiscent of online broadcaster Boiler Room. Additionally, the group will host MojoStock, inspired by the legendary Woodstock festival, set to take place soon. Funding these events comes from ticket sales rather than institutional support, allowing them greater flexibility and independence.
Marketing primarily through Instagram, Local Mojo reaches out directly to students, fostering a sense of connection and belonging among participants. Treasurer James Dobin-Smith emphasizes the importance of creating an accessible and inclusive culture that extends beyond dedicated music aficionados.
