Dennis Quaid is slated to take on a prominent role in an upcoming NASCAR-themed television series titled “Thunder Road,” currently under development at AMC. The show is described as a multi-generational narrative centered around the Whitlock family, whose deep connection to stock car racing is intertwined with their Southern heritage. Quaid will embody the character of Duane Whitlock, an iconic figure known as “The Wrecking Ball,” who is determined to protect his racing dynasty from fading away.

The series, produced in collaboration between AMC and NASCAR, is poised for a quick production start, with filming anticipated to commence this summer. Quaid's involvement is a significant step towards securing a full series order for “Thunder Road.” This project further solidifies AMC's commitment to expanding its sports-related programming, following recent successes in the genre.

Quaid's character, Duane Whitlock, is a formidable presence in the racing world, having built an empire from the ground up, with roots tracing back to illicit moonshine runs and local dirt tracks. The narrative will explore his struggle to maintain control of his blue-collar dynasty as it faces potential extinction, portraying an aging patriarch's fight to retain his leadership.

In addition to this new role, Quaid has recently appeared in several other television productions, including the serial killer drama “Happy Face” on Paramount+ and the Taylor Sheridan-produced “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” His extensive filmography includes notable features such as “The Rookie,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” and “Frequency.”

“Thunder Road” boasts a strong creative team, with John Fusco serving as writer and executive producer. Taylor Elmore will also executive produce and take on the role of showrunner. Cliff Roberts and Mark L. Smith are on board as executive producers, with Tim Clark and John Dahl representing NASCAR in executive producer capacities. Gladys Cheng is credited as a producer for the series.

AMC's recent ventures into sports content have proven successful, notably with the docuseries “Rise of the 49ers,” which achieved high viewership ratings. The network has also become the broadcast home for TNA Wrestling and its weekly program, “TNA Impact.” The casting of Dennis Quaid in “Thunder Road” is another strategic move to bolster AMC's presence in sports-centric entertainment.
