In Merriam, Kansas, an extraordinary event unfolded this weekend where children with mobility challenges received a life-changing gift. Geeks for Kids, a program driven by the nonprofit Learn, presented 100 custom-engineered electric cars to young individuals who face physical limitations. Hosted at the Porsche dealership in Merriam, the gathering brought together families, engineers, and volunteers united under the mission of enabling these children to experience independence. Each car was uniquely tailored to accommodate the specific needs of its recipient, offering controls ranging from joysticks to oversized buttons, head movements, or even breath-activated mechanisms.
This remarkable initiative began months ago when engineers like Randy Childers and Learn President Rebecca Kidwell embarked on designing and constructing these vehicles from scratch. Their efforts were fueled entirely by donations, raising $500,000 this year alone. Although Fisher Price cars, which previously served as the base models, were discontinued in January, the team remains committed to continuing their work with a new partner in the toy manufacturing industry next year.
Among the beneficiaries was Rhea Chancellor, a five-year-old living with Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), a rare neurological condition that restricts her movement below the shoulders. Her car featured specially adapted controls suited to her abilities. Rhea’s mother, Wanda Chancellor, expressed immense gratitude, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and independence. Another recipient, two-year-old Leon, whose legs have abnormalities, now has a car equipped with a soft flying disk he can launch while driving around his neighborhood, constructed using a 3D printer.
The event wasn’t just about handing over keys; it symbolized hope and potential.
