Fairmont Schools' Music Programs Flourish with Increased Participation

The music programs at Fairmont High School and Elementary School are thriving, marked by a significant rise in student participation and an expanding calendar of events. In May alone, there are six scheduled performances across the band, choir, and orchestra groups. These include special appearances such as the 11-12 grade orchestra playing at the Red Rock Center for the Arts, senior choir students performing at graduation ceremonies, and the high school band participating in Memorial Day festivities. Notably, 53 percent of high school students are now engaged in one or more music extracurriculars, reflecting the growing popularity of these activities.

Orchestra teacher Katie Hoaglund has witnessed substantial growth since joining the district in 2019. Initially, she had around 148 students; today, that number has surged to approximately 300. This expansion extends beyond orchestral participation, as choirs also report record-high membership. The inclusivity of the program allows all district students, including those in homeschooling or parochial settings, to participate. Despite the workload, Hoaglund emphasizes the rewarding nature of organizing these events, appreciating the collaborative effort from staff and volunteers.

Hoaglund highlights multiple benefits for students involved in music. Beyond its positive impact on brain development and offering respite from screen time, it fosters creativity and provides opportunities for lifelong engagement. Similarly, elementary school music and choir teacher Emily Labes notes increasing enthusiasm among younger students. Around 300 students opted into the recent choir concert, demonstrating the appeal of these activities even though participation is voluntary. Flexibility in scheduling ensures compatibility with other extracurriculars like sports, further encouraging involvement.

Approximately 90 percent of eligible elementary students participate in at least one of the three music groups—choir, band, or orchestra. Beyond musical skills, these programs enhance various non-musical competencies, such as reading, mathematics through rhythm understanding, concentration, confidence, and cultural awareness. Looking ahead, the Fairmont School Orchestra plans to perform at Interlaken Heritage Days in June. Additionally, summer offerings like Summer Symphony and marching band provide further opportunities for students eager to expand their musical experiences.

This surge in interest underscores the profound value students derive from music education. Through dedicated teachers and supportive communities, Fairmont's music programs continue to inspire both academic and personal growth, setting a benchmark for educational enrichment nationwide.
