Navigating Volatility: A Quarter of Economic Reevaluation

Global Economic Shifts and Geopolitical Impact

The initial three months of the year were largely characterized not by predetermined economic results but by a profound reevaluation of underlying risks. The quarter began with a generally positive economic outlook, marked by expectations of steady global growth and manageable inflation. However, the conflict in Iran significantly altered these perceptions, leading to concerns about potential disruptions in global commodity supplies due to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This shift biased expectations toward a scenario of decelerated growth coupled with elevated inflation.

Central Bank Responses and Monetary Policy Adjustments

In response to these revised economic forecasts, futures markets began to price in multiple interest rate increases from both the Bank of England and the European Central Bank. Concurrently, market expectations for easing by the U.S. Federal Reserve were scaled back. These adjustments reflect a more hawkish stance from central banks aiming to counteract inflationary pressures stemming from commodity price volatility and supply chain uncertainties.

Energy Market Dynamics and Sector Performance

A direct consequence of the geopolitical tensions was a sharp rise in Brent crude oil prices, which surpassed $100 per barrel. This surge made the energy sector a significant outperformer in the equity markets during an otherwise challenging first quarter. The increased energy costs further fueled inflation concerns and influenced broader economic sentiment.

Fixed Income Market Movements and Credit Spreads

Within the fixed income markets, investment grade credit spreads expanded by 10 basis points, reaching 0.83%. The high yield segment experienced a more pronounced widening, with spreads increasing by 51 basis points to 3.17%. These movements reflect heightened investor caution and a demand for greater compensation for credit risk in an uncertain economic environment.

Northern Funds Short Bond Fund Performance Review

The Northern Funds Short Bond Fund delivered a total return of 0.26% during the quarter. This performance resulted in a slight underperformance relative to its benchmark, which returned 0.28%, representing a deviation of 2 basis points. The fund's performance reflects the challenges posed by the volatile market conditions and the broader repricing of risk in fixed income assets.

New Found Gold: Navigating Risk and Opportunity in Gold Exploration
New Found Gold is transitioning from a speculative explorer to a potential developer. The recent acquisition of Maritime, including Pine Cove's permitted mill, provides a practical solution for ore processing and could re-rate the company. While Queensway's Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) shows attractive economics with phased capital expenditure minimizing dilution, grade continuity and funding remain key uncertainties. Despite significant risks, I consider NFGC a speculative buy, anticipating a 40% Net Asset Value (NAV) upside with successful execution and de-risking.

Western Midstream Partners: A Leading Player in the Midstream Sector
Western Midstream Partners (WES) has received a 'strong buy' rating due to its attractive valuation, low debt levels, and strong dividend yield. The company's recent acquisition of Brazos Delaware is expected to boost processing capacity and generate significant synergies. WES has demonstrated consistent growth in revenue, profit, and cash flow, with produced water throughput increasing substantially in Q1. Strategic investments in infrastructure further strengthen its long-term outlook.

The first quarter of 2026 saw U.S. stocks impacted by Middle East tensions and inflation concerns. The John Hancock U.S. Global Leaders Growth Fund underperformed its benchmark, the Russell 1000 Growth Index, largely due to stock choices within the IT sector. AI disruption affected companies like Intuit, Inc. and Salesforce.com, Inc., despite strong earnings. SGA Sustainable Growth Advisers strategically added Mastercard, Inc. and divested from Gartner, Inc. and UnitedHealth Group, Inc.

Global Trade Experiences Deepening Decline in May Amidst Ongoing Conflicts
Global exports witnessed a further downturn in May, marking the third consecutive month of decline, as indicated by the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) surveys. The Enduring Impact of Capital Expenditures on Inflation and Commodity Markets
Despite recent easing of inflation concerns, the extensive capital expenditures in AI infrastructure, alongside increased global spending on defense and energy security, are creating a persistent demand for commodities. This surge in demand for resources like copper and rare earth elements, coupled with limited supply, suggests an ongoing inflationary pressure that extends beyond traditional oil price dynamics. These trends highlight a fundamental shift in economic drivers, making commodity-linked investments increasingly relevant for inflation resilience.
