The international trade in cotton is expected to see substantial growth, with projections indicating an increase from 9.4 million metric tons in the 2025/26 period to around 10.3 million metric tons by the 2028/29 season. This anticipated expansion comes despite a backdrop of increasing supply-side pressures and ongoing global political uncertainties. The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) highlights that this upward trend will be influenced by a complex interplay of various factors, including production volumes, consumption rates, and existing inventory levels.

According to the ICAC, the 2026/27 season is predicted to witness a 2% decline in worldwide cotton output, settling at 25.8 million metric tons. Concurrently, consumption is expected to maintain its stability, hovering around 25.5 million metric tons. This narrowing difference between supply and demand underscores the critical role that exporters' stockpiles will play in fulfilling international market requirements. Parkhi Vats, a Principal Statistician at ICAC and the report's author, emphasized that the global cotton market is entering a phase where elements such as supply limitations, inventory volumes, policy decisions, and consumption patterns will exert considerable influence. Despite prevailing production hurdles and geopolitical instability, the medium-term outlook suggests a sustained increase in trade, as markets adjust to consistent consumption and evolving sourcing relationships.

Key regional trends are also shaping this global cotton landscape. Brazil is forecast to maintain its position as the leading global exporter of cotton lint in 2025/26. This dominance is attributed to robust harvests, competitive pricing strategies, and enhanced access to international markets, even as reduced availability from the United States compels buyers to seek alternative sources. Although U.S. cotton exports experienced a dip in 2025/26, they are projected to recover by 3% in 2026/27, supported by higher ending stocks and a gradual market resurgence. China, being the world's largest consumer of cotton, is expected to significantly boost its imports in 2025/26 as its demand recovers. Extended growth in China's textile and apparel manufacturing could further stimulate imports, thereby bolstering global trade. Bangladesh remains a major importer, despite its consumption and imports being affected by economic and energy challenges. Vietnam is steadily increasing its prominence as an importer, driven by its burgeoning textile sector and developing trade alliances. India's cotton trade dynamics are also evolving, influenced by new policy measures and rising domestic consumption.

Beyond the sheer volume of trade, the ICAC has identified several potential risk factors that could impact the future of cotton trade. These include shifts in tariff regulations, the emergence of new trade agreements, elevated energy costs, and persistent logistical complications, particularly those affecting crucial shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz. The report stresses that as global production and consumption become more closely aligned, any unexpected surge in demand could necessitate bulk exporters to draw more heavily from their existing inventories. This delicate equilibrium makes international pricing and strategic sourcing decisions more complex and critical than ever before.
