Global equity markets recently witnessed a notable surge, largely propelled by an ongoing wave of optimism surrounding the worldwide proliferation of AI data centers. Despite this overall positive trend, our investment portfolio exhibited a minor underperformance when measured against its primary broad-market benchmark. This slight lag was primarily attributable to our strategic decision to maintain an underweight position in the information technology sector. Nevertheless, it is important to highlight that even with this cautious allocation, the information technology segment still emerged as the single largest contributor to our portfolio's absolute returns during this period, showcasing strong individual performances from key holdings such as Nokia and TDK Corp.

During the recent financial quarter, global stock markets experienced a significant upward movement, predominantly driven by the surging enthusiasm for artificial intelligence data center development across the globe. This widespread market rally, however, saw our portfolio delivering a performance that marginally trailed its designated broad-market benchmark. The primary factor for this slight underperformance was our deliberate investment strategy of maintaining a reduced exposure to the information technology sector. Paradoxically, even with this conservative weighting, the information technology sector proved to be the most substantial positive influence on our portfolio's overall absolute returns. This was largely due to the robust contributions from specific holdings within this sector, particularly Finnish telecommunications equipment giant Nokia and Japanese electronic components and battery manufacturer TDK Corp., which demonstrated impressive individual growth and stability.

Market Dynamics and Portfolio Performance

Global equity markets witnessed a strong rally in the recent quarter, propelled by continued investor confidence in the expanding AI data center infrastructure worldwide. Despite this positive market sentiment, our portfolio experienced a slight underperformance compared to its benchmark. This was primarily due to our strategic underweighting in the information technology sector. However, this same sector, despite being underweighted, proved to be the top contributor to the portfolio's absolute returns, highlighting the robust performance of individual holdings within it.

The recent quarter was characterized by a buoyant global equity market, where optimism surrounding the expansion of AI data centers served as a significant catalyst for growth. This widespread rally indicated a strong belief in the future of artificial intelligence and its infrastructure demands among investors. Our portfolio, adhering to a disciplined investment approach, nevertheless registered a marginal underperformance relative to its broad-market benchmark. This outcome was a direct consequence of our tactical decision to maintain a comparatively lower allocation to the information technology sector. While this underweight contributed to the relative lag, it is crucial to note that the information technology sector, driven by strong individual company performances, paradoxically became the largest positive influence on our portfolio's total absolute gains. This illustrates the dual nature of market dynamics, where strategic positioning against broad trends can still yield significant contributions from specific high-performing assets, even if the overall sector allocation differs from the market's enthusiasm.

Key Contributors to Absolute Returns

Even with an underweight position in information technology, the sector was the largest absolute contributor to the portfolio's returns. This was mainly due to the strong performance of Finnish telecom equipment manufacturer Nokia and Japanese electronic component and battery maker TDK Corp. These companies demonstrated significant growth, offsetting the overall cautious allocation to the sector and underscoring the success of stock-specific selections within the portfolio.

Despite the strategic decision to maintain a reduced exposure to the information technology sector, it emerged as the most significant driver of absolute returns for the portfolio during the quarter. This counter-intuitive outcome was predominantly fueled by the exceptional performance of a few key holdings, specifically Finnish telecommunications equipment manufacturer Nokia and Japanese electronic component and battery maker TDK Corp. Both companies delivered robust results, with Nokia showcasing strength in its core telecom infrastructure business and TDK Corp. benefiting from strong demand for its electronic components, particularly in areas related to advanced technology and AI. Their individual successes not only mitigated the impact of the broader underweighting in the IT sector but also significantly boosted the portfolio's overall performance, validating the efficacy of granular, bottom-up stock selection in generating alpha, even when deviating from popular sector allocations. This demonstrates that even in a sector where the portfolio is intentionally under-allocated, carefully chosen, high-quality companies can still provide substantial positive contributions and outperform market expectations, underscoring the importance of fundamental research and selective investment.

Emerging Market Sovereign Debt Sees Q2 Rally, EMBD Underperforms
In the second quarter, emerging market sovereign debt experienced a significant rally, primarily driven by high-yield issuers. This surge was attributed to an easing of geopolitical tensions and stagflation fears, which boosted risk appetite and narrowed credit spreads. Despite the overall positive trend, the EMBD fund underperformed its benchmark by 70 basis points. Looking ahead, the outlook for EM sovereign debt remains positive, supported by sustained global economic growth, robust AI-related investments, and favorable fiscal policies, all contributing to lower recession risks and stable credit spreads.
