The second quarter of the year brought a noticeable shift in the gold market, characterized by a moderation in price and varied demand across different sectors. The LBMA (PM) gold price, after reaching a record high in the first quarter, experienced an 8% correction, settling at an average of US$4,506.29 per ounce. Despite this quarterly decrease, the price point remained significantly elevated, showing a robust 37% increase when compared to the average price from the second quarter of the previous year (2025). This sustained high valuation suggests underlying strength in the gold market, even as short-term fluctuations occur.

Amidst these price movements, global demand for gold jewelry faced considerable headwinds. The second quarter recorded one of the lowest figures for jewelry consumption in recent history, and the cumulative demand for the first half of the year also showed a sharp year-on-year decline. This downturn is likely influenced by the persistently high gold prices, which can deter consumers from purchasing non-essential items. Concurrently, investment in gold, excluding over-the-counter transactions, also saw a contraction. This was primarily driven by a reversal in sentiment towards gold Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), leading to outflows, coupled with a slowdown in demand for physical gold bars and coins. In contrast, the industrial use of gold displayed a modest upward trend, increasing by 2% year-on-year to 80 tons, highlighting its essential role in various technological applications.

Despite the challenges in specific segments, the overall gold market demonstrated resilience through healthy net purchases, which amounted to 289 tons in the second quarter. This indicates that institutional and sovereign buyers continue to view gold as a valuable asset, even if individual investor behavior shifts. The first half of the year's total demand, including over-the-counter transactions, remained stable at 1,269 tons, matching the previous year's figures. While the volume stayed consistent, the value of total demand saw a significant increase, underscoring the impact of higher gold prices. This dynamic market environment, with fluctuating demand drivers and a strong underlying price trend, suggests a complex interplay of economic factors and investor sentiment.

The intricate dance of supply and demand in the gold market reflects its enduring significance as both a safe-haven asset and an industrial commodity. The data from the second quarter and the first half of the year collectively emphasize gold's unique position in the global economy, adapting to diverse economic conditions while maintaining its fundamental value. The ability of gold to sustain robust net purchases amidst price adjustments and shifts in consumer behavior underscores its inherent strength and appeal as a long-term store of wealth.
