This Saturday, the Whip City Animal Sanctuary in Westfield transforms into a vibrant hub of music and community spirit. From noon to 6 p.m., the sanctuary's grounds will host an event titled "Groovin’ with Garrett," dedicated to supporting Garrett Wheeler, a cherished local resident who suffered paralysis in a skiing accident. This celebration features live performances by renowned musicians, food trucks offering diverse cuisines, and numerous raffle opportunities. The funds raised aim to cover Garrett’s recovery needs, encompassing specialized equipment, home adjustments, and extended rehabilitation costs.
Organized by Steve Nagel and powered entirely by volunteers, this festival showcases the strength of community bonds. Mike Cianciola, a family friend and key organizer, emphasized the collaborative efforts of bands and venues donating their services and over 50 individuals volunteering tirelessly for the cause. Notable acts include Madison Curbelo from "The Voice," Rednave, Dave O Band, Vicky and Brian Show, Southern Rain, and The Friendship Band, with Garrett himself being a member of the closing act.
Tickets are priced at $30 in advance for those aged 11 and above, increasing to $40 at the gate, while children under ten enter free. Pre-purchased tickets can be secured through EventSprout. Volunteers from the Whip City Animal Sanctuary and Northampton Honor Society manage logistics, with Elm Electric providing stage power, lawn games courtesy of the Down Syndrome Resource Group, and Valet Park of America assisting with parking arrangements.
Food options abound, featuring Log Rolling from the Log Cabin, Poppi’s, a beer truck from The Beer Guy, and Moolicious Creamery. Beyond entertainment, this event highlights Garrett’s enduring legacy within the community—despite personal tragedies like losing his maternal grandparents and brother, he remains an active participant in the Down syndrome community, engages in Special Olympics, and aspires to take up shot put post-injury. His volunteer work at the Whip City Animal Sanctuary further underscores his commitment to giving back.
Cianciola noted that Garrett's family faces immense emotional and financial burdens adjusting to his new circumstances. The committee hopes to alleviate these pressures by rallying community support. Even those unable to attend can contribute via a GoFundMe page established for Garrett’s ongoing expenses.
