HBO Max has officially secured an exclusive first-look deal with renowned Spanish television executive Domingo Corral. This strategic collaboration is set to bring a new wave of innovative Spanish content to the global streaming service. Corral, celebrated for his involvement in the Oscar-nominated film 'Sirât,' will now exclusively develop television projects for HBO Max, reinforcing the platform's commitment to diverse and high-quality international productions. The announcement, made at the Series Mania festival, underscores the significance of this partnership for both parties and the broader European television landscape.

The agreement was publicly revealed by Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max's Head of Original Content, during the Series Mania festival held in Lille, France. Aubrey lauded Corral as a visionary who champions unique storytelling voices and fosters strong creative partnerships within the industry. She emphasized that this deal would grant the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streamer exclusive access to television projects from one of Spain's most esteemed producers, further enriching its content library with compelling Spanish narratives.

Before joining forces with HBO Max, Domingo Corral held prominent positions as the head of content at Movistar Plus+ and previously at Telefónica’s TV division. During his tenure, he was instrumental in overseeing the creation of numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful Spanish films and television series. His notable television credits include 'Riot Police' (2020), 'The Messiah' (2023), and the period drama 'The Anatomy of a Moment,' which was also featured at Series Mania.

Corral's departure from Movistar Plus+ last year sparked considerable discussion within the Spanish creative community. A powerful testament to his influence, 144 prominent figures, including acclaimed actors Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, and director Pedro Almodóvar, signed an open letter expressing their concern about the potential impact of his exit on the Spanish entertainment industry. This collective show of support highlighted his invaluable contributions and the high regard in which he is held by his peers.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new venture, Corral stated his delight in finding a partner that aligns with his vision for producing impactful series. He acknowledged HBO's consistent dedication to excellence, daring narratives, and originality as a driving force behind his own storytelling philosophy. This shared commitment to artistic integrity and groundbreaking content promises an exciting future for Spanish productions on the international stage.

Aubrey also disclosed the inaugural project under this new partnership: a series set in the 1980s, delving into the infamous case of Santiago Corella, infamously known as 'El Nani.' Corella, a petty criminal from the disadvantaged neighborhoods of Spain, was unjustly apprehended by a police unit composed of former officers from Franco's fascist regime and subsequently vanished. The 'El Nani' case evolved into a national cause célèbre when the implicated police officers faced trial in 1988, transforming the proceedings into a critical litmus test for Spain's delicate transition from a Fascist dictatorship to a democratic state.

Currently in the development phase, the series 'El Nani' will be helmed by Alberto Rodríguez and Rafael Cobos, the creative minds behind the aforementioned period drama 'The Anatomy of a Moment.' Their proven expertise in crafting intricate historical narratives suggests that 'El Nani' will offer a profound exploration of a pivotal moment in Spanish history, merging true crime with a deep dive into the nation's political evolution.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone for HBO Max in expanding its global footprint and for Spanish television in gaining wider international recognition. By partnering with a producer of Corral's caliber, HBO Max is poised to deliver authentic and resonant stories that reflect the rich cultural tapestry of Spain, engaging audiences worldwide with narratives that are both locally specific and universally appealing.
