The yen's recent performance reflects the impact of these actions, with the USD/JPY exchange rate dropping significantly from 163.38 on July 29 to below 157 by August 3. Loo suggests that the dollar-yen pairing may have reached its peak near 164, with market attention now shifting towards 155 as a crucial level indicating a strengthening yen. This change in sentiment is further supported by declining volatility indicators and a re-steepening of the 10-year-minus-2-year Treasury spread, suggesting reduced systemic risk from disorderly reserve liquidations.

The strategic deployment of the FEMA repo facility, previously utilized during short-term funding crises in 2019, is lauded by Loo as a sagacious decision by both nations. This mechanism enables Japan to secure necessary dollar funding for intervention without physically offloading its US Treasury assets, thus preventing adverse effects on the US market, which is already experiencing tight funding conditions and elevated yields.
