After a six-year hiatus, indie-rock musician Jay Som, also known as Melina Duterte, is poised to make a significant return to the music scene with her upcoming album, 'Belong'. This highly anticipated release, scheduled for October 10, marks a new chapter for Duterte, who has spent recent years contributing behind the scenes to projects with other prominent artists. Her solo comeback is heralded by the release of two new tracks, \"A Million Reasons Why\" and \"Float,\" the latter featuring a collaboration with Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World. This artistic resurgence also includes an extensive tour across the United States, allowing fans to experience her new material live.

Melina Duterte’s journey back into the spotlight with 'Belong' showcases a fresh approach to her musical creations. While previously maintaining a more solitary artistic process, this new record sees her openly embracing collaborative efforts. Notably, Paramore’s Hayley Williams lends her talents to the track \"Past Lives,\" and Lexi Vega from Mini Trees contributes vocals across the album. Other musicians, including Joao Gonzalez of Soft Glas, Mal Hauser, Steph Marziano, and Kyle Pulley, have also enriched the 11-track collection. The album is characterized by a unique fusion of vibrant power-pop and atmospheric ballads, interspersed with experimental electronic elements, promising a diverse and captivating listening experience for her audience.

The creative process behind 'Belong' was deeply introspective for Duterte. Reflecting on \"Float,\" she shared that the song delves into the struggle of clinging to past versions of oneself for comfort and safety. She explained that the overwhelming fear of the unknown can sometimes be best confronted by simply sitting with it, rather than attempting to escape or combat it directly. This theme resonates throughout the album, offering listeners a glimpse into her personal growth and artistic evolution. Jim Adkins, who collaborated on \"Float,\" praised Duterte’s professionalism and vision, expressing his enjoyment in contributing to her work, further highlighting the positive and enriching nature of these new partnerships.

The excitement surrounding 'Belong' extends beyond the album itself, as Jay Som is set to embark on a comprehensive U.S. tour shortly after its release. Kicking off on November 23 in Los Angeles, the tour will weave through major cities including Austin, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, and Minneapolis, concluding on December 14. Tickets for these performances will be available for general purchase starting Friday, July 11. In addition to her headline shows, Jay Som will also join Lucy Dacus for a series of select performances from July 25 through August 18, offering fans multiple opportunities to witness her compelling live presence and new music.

Jay Som’s new album, 'Belong', signifies a compelling return for Melina Duterte, marked by artistic evolution and significant collaborations. The blend of introspective songwriting and diverse musical influences promises a profound listening experience, further enriched by her upcoming U.S. tour dates.
