Alyssa Muñiz, a talented musician from Union, New Jersey, has transformed her life from performing on prestigious stages worldwide to using music as a therapeutic tool. Initially pursuing a career in the performing arts, Muñiz gained recognition through international tours and Off-Broadway performances. However, the pandemic prompted her to seek a deeper purpose, leading her to discover music therapy. Inspired by her grandmother’s experience with Alzheimer’s disease, she enrolled at Montclair State University to study this field. Now completing her internship at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Muñiz aims to assist individuals with disabilities, trauma, and Alzheimer’s through her musical talents.
From Stage Performances to Therapeutic Impact
Muñiz's journey began with aspirations of becoming a renowned performer. Her early career included starring roles in Off-Broadway shows and performing at iconic venues like Birdland and 54 Below. Despite her success, she felt unfulfilled, prompting her to explore music therapy. This shift allowed her to utilize her skills for healing rather than mere entertainment.
During her time as a performer, Muñiz realized that music could evoke profound emotional responses. Witnessing how it helped her grandmother cope with Alzheimer’s inspired her transition. At Montclair State University, she expanded her instrumental repertoire, learning guitar and drums alongside piano. Pursuing a Career in Music Therapy
As Muñiz nears graduation, her focus shifts toward obtaining board certification and establishing herself professionally. Her internship at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music provides valuable hands-on experience working with diverse populations, including children with ADHD and seniors with Alzheimer’s. Through these interactions, she reinforces her belief in music’s transformative power.
