A group of fourth-grade students from West Walker Primary School recently embarked on an extraordinary journey, culminating in an exclusive interview with a Newcastle United football star. This memorable experience was the grand finale of their Junior Reporters program, an initiative designed to ignite a passion for writing and literacy among young learners. The program, a collaborative effort between the Newcastle United Foundation and the Premier League Primary Stars, ingeniously leverages the universal appeal of football to cultivate essential communication and analytical abilities.

The Junior Reporters program, a cornerstone of the Premier League Primary Stars initiative, has successfully engaged hundreds of elementary school children in Walker. Its primary objective is to enhance writing and literacy skills by channeling their enthusiasm for football into educational activities. As a reward for their diligent participation and remarkable progress, the students were invited to St. James' Park, the iconic home of Newcastle United. There, they sharpened their journalistic prowess by conducting a sit-down interview with Swedish international player, Anthony Elanga. This unique opportunity provided a tangible link between their classroom learning and real-world application.

During the interview, the young reporters, brimming with curiosity, posed a series of insightful questions to Elanga. They delved into topics ranging from his transition to Newcastle and his life in the North East, to his childhood football heroes and role models. The discussion also touched upon his advice for aspiring individuals looking to transform their passions into successful careers, both within and beyond the realm of professional football. This interactive session allowed the children to practice public speaking, critical thinking, and interviewing techniques in an exciting and engaging environment.

Phil Cowler, the Senior Primary Education Coordinator at Newcastle United Foundation, emphasized the program's success in inspiring children to embrace writing. He noted that the experience of interviewing a Premier League player in the media suite was an 'unforgettable' one, offering them a practical understanding of how literacy skills are applied outside of academic settings. The program also aimed to broaden their horizons regarding potential career paths. Furthermore, the initiative promoted inclusivity by encouraging children to compose football-themed haiku poems, with every participant receiving a 'United As One'-branded notebook and writing tools to sustain their literary development.

The Junior Reporters initiative, a joint venture between Newcastle United and its Foundation, is meticulously structured to align with National Curriculum objectives while capitalizing on the excitement of the Premier League. The program's core focus areas include developing confidence in public speaking and interviewing, honing writing and critical thinking skills, and fostering aspirations for future careers in sports and other fields. The day concluded with a commemorative team photograph, ensuring that the young journalists had ample 'exclusive' material to enrich their upcoming class reports. This comprehensive program not only improved their academic skills but also provided invaluable life experiences.

The Premier League Primary Stars program, fully funded by the Premier League through its Foundation, is dedicated to utilizing the power of football to encourage children to lead active lives and acquire vital life skills. This educational framework effectively merges the thrill of sport with the rigor of academic learning, creating a dynamic and impactful learning environment for thousands of primary school students. The Junior Reporters project exemplifies this mission by offering an immersive, real-world application of classroom knowledge, thereby fostering a new generation of articulate and engaged individuals.
