A long-anticipated musical rendition of the acclaimed work "Girl, Interrupted," enriched with original compositions by Aimee Mann, is finally reaching the stage this year. This production is notable for featuring the theatrical debut of music artist King Princess, also known as Mikaela Straus, in a key role. This development marks a significant milestone for both the musical and Straus's burgeoning acting career, bringing a fresh interpretation to a story previously celebrated in literature and film.

Mikaela Straus will portray the character of Lisa, a role famously brought to life by Angelina Jolie in the 1999 film adaptation, which earned Jolie an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The musical, based on Susanna Kaysen’s memoir, has been in development for nearly a decade, with Mann's involvement confirmed since at least 2018. The creation of the musical's score ran concurrently with Mann's 2022 album, "Queens of the Summer Hotel," showcasing a deep intertwining of her creative processes.

The Public Theater in New York City is slated to host the preview performances of "Girl, Interrupted" starting May 13. The official theatrical run will then commence on June 4 and conclude on June 21. This engagement offers audiences a unique opportunity to experience the iconic narrative through a new artistic lens, enhanced by Mann's distinctive musical style and Straus's interpretation of a complex character.

While this marks her theatrical debut, Straus is not entirely new to the acting world. Her prior experiences include a recurring part in the second season of Hulu's "Nine Perfect Strangers" and a role as Hugh Jackman's daughter in the upcoming 2025 film "Song Sung Blue," which centers on a Neil Diamond tribute band. Additionally, she is set to appear alongside Este Haim, Maya Hawke, and Julia Fox in Will Gluck's forthcoming romantic comedy, "One Night Only," further solidifying her presence in the acting landscape.

The convergence of Aimee Mann's musical talent and King Princess's acting prowess in "Girl, Interrupted" promises to deliver a compelling theatrical experience. This long-awaited production, with its strong artistic foundations and fresh casting, is poised to captivate audiences and offer a new dimension to a cherished story.
