Lenny Kaye, a renowned figure in the music world with a career spanning over five decades, embarks on a new chapter with the release of his debut solo album, 'Goin' Local.' This collection of songs offers a fresh perspective on his artistry, moving beyond his established reputation to explore new musical territories.

Lenny Kaye: A Timeless Debut, Unexpected Melodies

A Career Marked by Collaboration and Diverse Endeavors

After more than 55 years immersed in musical collaborations, Lenny Kaye, at the age of 79, is making his official solo debut. His new album, 'Goin' Local,' set to be released on July 17, has already elicited surprise from his long-time bandmate, Patti Smith, who remarked on its unique sound. Kaye's impressive career encompasses not only his role as Smith's lead guitarist and creative partner but also includes authoring several books, producing various artists, and curating the influential 'Nuggets' garage-rock compilation.

The Journey to a Solo Release: Patience and Personal Expression

Kaye explains that the timing for his solo venture was a matter of patience and personal focus, echoing Orson Welles' sentiment that "there is no wine before its time." He acknowledges that his multifaceted career often meant prioritizing other projects, leaving his personal songwriting for later. This album, therefore, represents a dedicated exploration of his individual artistic voice, featuring songs that are both deeply personal and created for his own enjoyment.

Surprising Sounds and Influential Connections

'Goin' Local' is expected to surprise listeners, blending elements of downtown rock with tender, story-driven songs that lean towards a melodic sweetness reminiscent of Buddy Holly. The album also features "Solstice," a vibrant co-written track with Patti Smith. Kaye describes the album's emotional depth, moving beyond his "garage rock" persona to showcase a more vulnerable side, reflecting his artistic growth since his teenage years.

Musical Inspirations and Acoustic Explorations

Kaye cites artists like Townes Van Zandt, Eric Andersen, Kevin Kinney, and Alejandro Escovedo as inspirations for the album's softer compositions. He also credits his experience producing Suzanne Vega in the Eighties with highlighting the beauty of the acoustic guitar and the intimate process of allowing a song to naturally unfold.

The "Debut" with an Asterisk: A Fresh Start for a New Millennium

While this is billed as his official solo debut, Kaye clarifies that he released 'I've Got A Right' under the band name Lenny Kaye Connection in 1984. He views 'Goin' Local' as his true solo debut for the current millennium, emphasizing a feeling of renewal and forward momentum in his artistic journey.

Echoes of the Past, Sounds of the Present

Some tracks on 'Goin' Local' originated from sessions in the 2010s with Patti Smith Group bassist Tony Shanahan. Kaye returned to these unfinished pieces two years ago, adding new material. He notes that some songs date back 15 to 20 years, offering a glimpse into earlier versions of himself, particularly the title track, "Goin' Local," which reflects his younger, more rebellious days in the Lower East Side.

Reflections on Legacy: "The Things You Leave Behind"

A poignant track on the album, "The Things You Leave Behind," delves into the contemplation of material possessions and memories. Kaye describes his basement filled with memorabilia, sheet music, and guitars, prompting reflections on what remains after one's passing, a theme often brought up by his daughter.

A Touching Family Collaboration: "Yes I Will"

The album's concluding track, "Yes I Will," features lyrics penned by Kaye's late uncle, Larry Kusic, a successful Hollywood songwriter known for themes from 'The Godfather' and 'Romeo and Juliet.' This collaboration is deeply meaningful for Kaye, harkening back to his first recording at age 19, "Crazy Like A Fox," also written by Kusic, under the pseudonym Link Cromwell.

Intimate Live Performances: Connecting Through Song

Kaye plans a series of solo acoustic performances, including joint shows with Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and a solo festival appearance. He expresses his enjoyment for this intimate performance style, as it allows him to fully immerse himself in his songs and connect with the audience through his music and humor.
