Following the conclusion of spring training, the Michigan State football program has actively engaged in recruitment, culminating in a significant announcement this past Friday evening.

Spartans Bolster Roster: Chicago's Four-Star Talent Joins the Green and White

A Significant Defensive Addition

Ohimai Ozolua, a highly-rated defensive tackle from St. Rita High School in Chicago, has officially committed to Michigan State. Ranked as a four-star prospect and 408th nationally by the 247Sports Composite, Ozolua stands at an impressive 6-foot-6 and weighs 250 pounds. Remarkably, the previous season marked his inaugural experience in organized football, showcasing his immense raw talent and potential.

Fitzgerald's Impact on Chicago Recruitment

This commitment is particularly noteworthy as Ozolua is the first prospect from the Chicago metropolitan area to pledge to the Spartans under the leadership of head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Since taking charge in December, Fitzgerald, a long-time figure in Chicago football circles, has prioritized recruiting from his former stomping grounds. Ozolua's inclusion elevates the 2026 recruiting class to six commits, making him the first four-star talent among them.

Elevating the Spartan Roster

Michigan State has historically attracted promising defensive players. In the 2025 class, the team secured four four-star recruits, including Samson Gash and Collin Campbell, both highly regarded and ranked within the top 300. Derrick Simmons, a defensive lineman from Frankenmuth, also a four-star recruit, redshirted last season but demonstrated significant promise. Similarly, linebacker DeJae White, another four-star prospect, also redshirted. Ozolua's commitment underscores the new coaching staff's ability to attract top-tier talent, signaling a positive trajectory for future recruitment efforts.

A Highly Sought-After Talent

Ozolua's decision came after receiving 15 scholarship offers, with bids from prominent institutions such as Iowa, Michigan, and six other Big Ten Conference universities. He is scheduled to make an official visit to East Lansing on May 29, further solidifying his commitment and connection with the program.

Coaching Staff's Enthusiasm

The announcement of Ozolua's commitment was met with palpable excitement from the Michigan State coaching staff, a reaction that was less common under former head coach Jonathan Smith, who was relieved of his duties last season after a 9-15 record over two years. Winston DeLattiboudere III, Ozolua's primary recruiter and defensive line coach, celebrated the news with a GIF of the Spartan Leonidas from the film "300." Defensive coordinator Joe Rossi exclaimed, "'BIG' get!!!", while co-defensive coordinator Max Bullough also expressed his approval before deleting his post. Coach Fitzgerald, keen on re-establishing a strong recruiting presence in the Chicago area—a region that supplied talent to his Northwestern program for 17 years—shared his enthusiasm, quipping, "You can take the man out of Chicago but...".
