Moderna Stock Soars as Wolfe Research Upgrades Rating on Cancer Vaccine Progress

Moderna's stock experienced a significant upward trend on August 25, following Wolfe Research's decision to upgrade the biotechnology firm's rating. This positive adjustment was largely attributed to recent encouraging advancements in Moderna's personalized cancer vaccine program. This development signals a potential shift in the company's financial trajectory, moving beyond its pandemic-related successes into a new era of therapeutic innovation.

Analyst Alexandria Hammond of Wolfe Research revised the rating for Moderna (MRNA) to "Peer Perform." While a specific price target was not disclosed, this upgrade underscores the confidence in the stock's potential for growth in the latter half of 2026. This move is particularly noteworthy given that Moderna's stock price has already seen an approximate five-fold increase since the beginning of the current year.

The upgrade by Wolfe Research reflects a substantial reassessment of the risk associated with Moderna's oncology research and development pipeline. In a collaborative effort with Merck (MRK), Moderna recently unveiled positive outcomes from its Phase 3 trials for intismeran. This novel therapeutic is designed to complement Keytruda in the treatment of patients battling high-risk melanoma, aiming to enhance treatment efficacy and patient outcomes.

The clinical trial successfully achieved both its primary and secondary objectives. The findings demonstrated that the combined therapy of intismeran and Keytruda significantly lowered the probability of melanoma recurrence or spread when compared to Keytruda administered alone. Although the comprehensive clinical data are yet to be publicly detailed, these favorable late-stage trial results provide a much clearer pathway for Moderna and Merck toward gaining regulatory approvals for the treatment.

For Moderna's shares, these developments are profoundly impactful, as the company's strategic vision for growth post-COVID-19 largely hinges on its ability to effectively extend its groundbreaking mRNA technology into new therapeutic domains beyond infectious diseases. The success in the melanoma study substantially mitigates the clinical and regulatory uncertainties that previously shadowed Moderna's long-term strategy, opening doors to a new chapter of innovation and market expansion.

Wolfe Research's analysis projects unadjusted peak sales for intismeran across four primary indications to reach an impressive $9.2 billion. This figure, before profit-sharing agreements with Merck, highlights a potentially substantial new revenue stream that could unlock further upside potential for MRNA stock over the long haul. Additionally, Barchart's current "100% BUY" average opinion on Moderna indicates that technical market momentum also favors continued growth in the stock's value.

However, it is also important to consider that some analysts on Wall Street believe the recent rally in Moderna shares, fueled by promising late-stage trial data, might have progressed too rapidly. The broader consensus among Wall Street analysts currently rates MRNA as a "Hold." The average price target, approximately $83, suggests that there could be a significant downturn from the current valuation, prompting a cautious outlook amidst the excitement.
