Morgan Stanley has upheld its optimistic stance on Alibaba's stock, designating it a "top pick" despite a recent downward adjustment in its price target. The investment bank anticipates significant growth for Alibaba, particularly in its cloud computing sector, as the company navigates regulatory shifts and prepares for its upcoming earnings announcement.

Investment Firms Reevaluate Alibaba's Outlook Amidst Shifting Market Dynamics

In a notable move on July 26, 2026, investment banking giant Morgan Stanley reiterated its "top pick" rating for Alibaba (BABA) stock, a decision that comes shortly after analyst Gary Yu reduced the company's price target to $180 from an earlier $190. Despite this adjustment, the revised target still indicates a potential upside of approximately 60% compared to Alibaba's closing share price of $112.14 on the preceding Friday. This suggests a strong conviction from Wall Street regarding Alibaba's intrinsic value, which they believe is significantly undervalued by current market participants.

The rationale behind the initial price target reduction by Morgan Stanley in early July mirrored similar actions taken by other prominent financial institutions. HSBC, for instance, lowered its target for Alibaba to $170 from $176 in July, while maintaining a "buy" rating. Earlier, on June 24, Daiwa had already cut its target from $200 to $175, primarily attributing the revision to weaker-than-expected sales during China's 618 shopping festival.

However, Morgan Stanley's continued bullishness is rooted in several key areas. Analyst Gary Yu highlighted Alibaba's formidable cloud infrastructure, positioning it as the largest in China, and expressed confidence in its ability to capture a significant share in the evolving artificial intelligence landscape within the country. Furthermore, the bank emphasized Alibaba's strong cash generation, dividend policies, and ongoing share buyback programs as crucial supporting factors. An additional optimistic point was the perceived easing of the online regulatory environment, which is expected to create a more favorable operational climate for Alibaba.

Despite this positive assessment, Alibaba faces recent headwinds. On July 20, the European Commission imposed a substantial fine of 550 million euros on AliExpress, an Alibaba subsidiary, for alleged violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA). AliExpress has disputed the fine, labeling it disproportionate, and is expected to submit an action plan by October 20.

In the face of these developments, Alibaba's shares have shown resilience, climbing approximately 18% over the past month. Nevertheless, the stock remains considerably below its 52-week peak of $192.67. The company's impending late-August earnings report will serve as a critical benchmark, providing insights into whether the anticipated growth in its cloud services can bridge the existing valuation gap and validate Morgan Stanley's optimistic outlook.

The dynamic interplay of analyst expectations, regulatory challenges, and market performance underscores the complex landscape for major tech companies like Alibaba. While a reduced price target might signal caution, the continued "top pick" designation from a leading firm like Morgan Stanley suggests a belief in Alibaba's long-term potential, particularly in its strategic areas such as cloud computing. Investors will keenly await the upcoming earnings report for clearer indicators of the company's trajectory and its ability to realize the ambitious valuations set by analysts.
