Unveiling Strategic Gains and Market Volatility

A Quarter of Remarkable Returns: Outperforming Benchmarks

Our recent quarter concluded with impressive performance, boosting year-to-date returns to 15.91%. This significantly outpaces the S&P's 9.3% and narrowly trails the USRT's 16.96%. Since our inception, total returns have reached 236.3%, far exceeding the S&P's 181.29% and the USRT's 89.84%. Notably, these gains were achieved without significant exposure to semiconductors and were bolstered by a well-managed short book.

Uniqure's Triumph: A Biotech Success Story

The standout performer this quarter was Uniqure, a company we first highlighted in late 2025. This biotech firm has developed a promising gene therapy for Huntington's disease, a rare and fatal neurodegenerative condition. After an initial surge, regulatory hurdles caused a significant stock decline, pushing shares below cash value. However, a recent shift in FDA leadership and policy has paved the way for an accelerated approval filing, sending the stock soaring. While we partially trimmed our position due to risk management, our substantial remaining stake continues to benefit from this remarkable turnaround.

Gitlab's Strategic Positioning Amidst AI Evolution

Currently, our largest holding is Gitlab, which has performed exceptionally well since our initial investment earlier this year. Our core investment thesis centers on the increasing importance of code control, review, and approval as AI accelerates code production velocity. Gitlab's platform, serving 50% of the F100, is strategically positioned to capitalize on this trend. The company's significant growth in code pushes underscores its vital role in the evolving software development landscape, making it an attractive target for major AI players seeking strategic acquisition opportunities.

Navigating Macroeconomic Headwinds: Strait of Hormuz and AI Boom

We are closely monitoring two significant macroeconomic risks: the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the escalating AI boom. While the Hormuz situation presents immediate supply chain concerns, the AI sector's rapid expansion and massive capital expenditure warrant deeper scrutiny. The staggering investments in AI, currently estimated at $700 billion annually, necessitate unrealistic revenue generation targets to justify the outlay, raising concerns about a potential bust that could impact the broader economy.

The Precarious Balance of AI Investment and Returns

The current scale of AI investment appears unsustainable without a near-term breakthrough in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The tech industry, largely unfamiliar with capital-intensive, low-margin business models, may face a rude awakening. The aggressive ramp-up in memory production, driven by companies like Micron, further exacerbates these concerns, potentially leading to future price wars and margin compression, especially with increasing competition from China.

The Tipping Point: Signs of AI Market Adjustment

The question of how long the AI capital expenditure boom can persist remains. Recent releases of new AI models, emphasizing lower costs and competitive pricing, signal a shift from performance-only focus to cost-efficiency. This could indicate a deceleration in revenue growth as corporate users become more price-sensitive. While AI adoption has been incredibly swift, its rapid diffusion also implies a shorter adoption cycle, potentially leading to a more abrupt market correction.

Economic Impact of an AI Downturn

A significant slowdown in AI revenue growth or capital expenditure could have profound implications for the U.S. economy. Given the AI sector's substantial influence on public markets and household net worth, a downturn could trigger a recession. While ideally shallow and contained, the asset and debt-heavy nature of current AI investments in areas like data centers and cloud infrastructure poses a risk of a broader financial crisis if credit conditions tighten. We maintain cautious optimism, relying on our diversified portfolio and short positions to navigate these uncertainties.

Ibotta: Navigating a Pivotal Business Transformation
Ibotta, Inc. (IBTA) receives a Hold rating with a target price of $32, reflecting a balanced view of its risks and opportunities during a significant business shift. The direct-to-consumer (D2C) app, a former high-margin segment, is experiencing a downturn, with first-quarter D2C revenue dropping by 25% and margins shrinking considerably. Growth within the Ibotta Performance Network (IPN), which operates on lower margins, has yet to offset these D2C losses, leading to an overall decline in revenue and profitability. However, new collaborations with major players like Uber Eats, Giant Eagle, and DoorDash present promising avenues for growth, though tangible evidence of a sustained financial recovery is still pending.
