For over a decade, producer Jay Dempsey crafted music in his basement studio on 58th Street. Now, with the support of family and community, efforts are underway to reconstruct this vital creative hub.
For more than a decade, Jay Dempsey’s home-based studio had been a cornerstone for emerging musicians in the city. On April 7, tragedy struck when flames engulfed the property, originating from the very space where countless tracks were produced. Inside at the time were Jay, his brother Stefan, their mother, and Jay's two-year-old daughter. Thankfully, all occupants escaped unharmed, though they remain deeply affected by the experience.
The loss extended beyond personal belongings; equipment worth over ten thousand dollars was reduced to ashes. This included instruments and tools essential for recording sessions. The significance of the studio goes far deeper than its financial value—it served as a sanctuary for many aspiring artists, offering them a place to hone their craft without judgment.
