An innovative approach to early childhood education is emerging, combining the power of music with foundational concepts in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Two professors at Radford University have collaborated to create a unique curriculum that bridges these two disciplines through catchy children's songs. The initiative aims to engage young minds by presenting educational content in an interactive and enjoyable format.
This project began when Associate Professor Jennifer McDonel identified the strong connection between music and mathematics during her research on early childhood learning. Inspired by how children who love math naturally gravitate toward musical activities involving numbers, she embarked on writing songs that integrate both subjects. Partnering with "Zero-To-Three," a national nonprofit organization, McDonel focused on embedding essential vocabulary and concepts within her compositions. Her colleague, Dave Rivers, contributed his expertise in songwriting and production to enhance the project's appeal. Together, they crafted 44 tracks designed to stimulate mathematical thinking while fostering musical appreciation.
Their efforts culminated in the release of "Little Beats: Counting, Shapes, and Sets," a multi-album series acclaimed for its creative approach to education. Recognized as one of the top 100 children's albums in 2024, this collection showcases the potential of music as an educational tool. By incorporating diverse tonalities, meters, and styles, these songs not only teach mathematical concepts but also nurture musical growth. Looking ahead, McDonel and Rivers plan to expand their work into the realm of early literacy, preparing another set of songs for release next year.
