Unveiling 'Aasmani': A Journey of Love, Companionship, and Freedom

Sayani Gupta's Long-Awaited Directorial Journey

Indian actor Sayani Gupta embarks on her maiden directorial voyage with 'Aasmani,' a short film she meticulously crafted from script to screen. This project signifies a significant achievement for the Film and Television Institute of India alumna, fulfilling an aspiration she has nurtured for nearly two decades.

A Career Defined by Unconventional Choices

Gupta's acting career is distinguished by her consistent selection of unique and challenging roles. She gained international recognition for her performance in Shonali Bose's 'Margarita with a Straw' and has also made a notable impact on streaming platforms with the series 'Four More Shots Please!' Her impressive filmography includes 'Article 15,' 'Inside Edge,' 'Pagglait,' and 'Axone.'

The Heartfelt Narrative of 'Aasmani'

The film introduces audiences to Smita, an elderly woman in her late sixties, who shares an extraordinary connection with her vintage powder-blue Fiat, also named 'Aasmani.' She finds a companion in her sharp and witty young granddaughter, Tiya, as they navigate life's journey together. The ensemble cast features veteran actor Revathi, alongside talented performers Daria Bedi and Abhay Kaul.

A Collaborative Production Effort

'Aasmani' is brought to life through the collaborative efforts of Sayani Gupta Movies, the Sumitra Gupta Foundation for Arts, and One India Stories. Sayani Gupta herself serves as an executive producer, alongside Nikkhil Advani, Dia Mirza, and Ananya Rane. Paramita Ghosh, Sidharth Meer, Vinit D’Souza, Smriti Kiran, and Neeraj Gera are credited as co-producers.

A Foundation for Artistic Expression

This film marks the inaugural production of the Sumitra Gupta Foundation for Arts, with the backing of Advani. For One India Stories, a company established by childhood friends Mirza and Rane, 'Aasmani' represents their second release. The company is dedicated to fostering emotionally resonant narratives and empowering voices outside conventional industry frameworks.

Accolades and Recognition for the Screenplay

Even before its world premiere, the screenplay for 'Aasmani' has garnered significant international acclaim. It has received awards at prestigious competitions, including the New York Screenplay Competition, the Independent Short Awards LA, the Los Angeles Movie and Music Video Awards, the Cambridge Short Film Festival, and F.A.R.O Concurso de Cinema Mediterraneo e Mundial.

Gupta's Vision: Cinema as a Balm

Gupta expressed that directing a film has been a long-cherished dream since her film school days. She believes that in a world grappling with turmoil, cinema possesses the power to foster dialogue, inspire resistance, evoke emotions, and even offer solace. Her desire to tell stories has only intensified throughout her acting career.

Drawing Inspiration from Personal Experiences

The film's characters are inspired by Gupta's own memories of influential women in her family. Through a blend of humor and lightness, 'Aasmani' delves into profound emotional landscapes, exploring themes of love, companionship, freedom, redundancy, values, and loss. Gupta envisions the film as a source of warmth, affection, and happiness for all who experience it.

One India Stories' Commitment to Authentic Storytelling

Mirza and Rane highlight that 'Aasmani' perfectly embodies the mission of One India Stories: to provide creative support and a broader platform for filmmakers operating outside established industry norms. They emphasize the car's symbolic significance within the narrative, representing its owner's individuality and her quiet assertion of control within her family dynamics.

Sayani Gupta: A Filmmaker's Promise

Advani and the Sumitra Gupta Foundation for Arts commend Gupta's distinguished acting career, characterized by daring and unconventional choices, as a clear indication of the visionary filmmaker she is poised to become.
