A historic milestone is set for one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses as Myung-whun Chung, a distinguished South Korean conductor, steps into the role of music director. This marks a significant moment in the 247-year history of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where an Asian and non-Italian-born individual will lead the institution for the first time. The announcement came on Monday under the leadership of Fortunato Ortombina, who assumed his position earlier this year. Ortombina has championed Chung's nomination, emphasizing the conductor's longstanding relationship with La Scala since 1989.

Chung's career highlights include leading numerous renowned orchestras across Europe and Asia, making him a natural fit for the esteemed post. With over 84 opera performances and 141 concerts conducted at La Scala, he holds the record for the most appearances by any artist outside of official music directors. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, he was named honorary conductor of the Filarmonica della Scala in Milano in 2023, marking another first in the opera house's history. Beyond his musical achievements, Chung has actively promoted cultural diplomacy, notably through visits to North Korea aimed at fostering ties between the two Koreas.

The appointment reflects both the global reach of La Scala and its commitment to artistic excellence beyond national boundaries. Despite Italy's current emphasis on promoting local talent, there was no resistance from political or cultural authorities regarding Chung's selection. Italian Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli affirmed that La Scala retains full autonomy in choosing its leaders. As Chung prepares to take the podium in late 2026, his tenure promises to enhance the opera house’s international reputation while celebrating diversity in the arts. This decision underscores how embracing global perspectives can enrich cultural institutions, setting an example for others worldwide.
