Super Formula Race at Autopolis Cancelled Due to Severe Weather

The third round of the Super Formula championship at Autopolis was recently cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, specifically heavy rain. This decision, made by the event organizers, resulted in the race being declared null and void, with no points distributed to the drivers.

Weather Woes Halt High-Speed Action

Unforeseen Downpour Forces Cancellation

The Super Formula's third race of the season, scheduled at Autopolis, faced an abrupt end as torrential rainfall rendered the track unsafe for competition. Organizers made the difficult decision to call off the event after the race was red-flagged following just one lap behind the safety car, indicating the severity of standing water on the circuit.

No Points Awarded in the Aborted Race

With fewer than two laps completed, the race was officially nullified. This means that despite the efforts during qualifying and the initial start, no championship points were awarded to any of the participating drivers, impacting the overall standings.

Potential for a Rescheduled Event

Looking ahead, the event's organizers have indicated the possibility of rescheduling the cancelled race for a later date in the year. This approach was previously adopted in the last season when a race at Fuji Speedway was postponed due to fog, leading to an additional race being added to the season's final event at Suzuka.

Morning Practice and Support Races

Earlier in the day, the second practice session for Super Formula took place, although it was interrupted by a crash involving Luke Browning. In contrast, the Super Formula Lights support races proceeded as planned, despite the worsening weather conditions that would later impact the main event.

Weather Deterioration Leading to Race Stoppage

Initially, light rain progressed into a heavier downpour as reconnaissance laps concluded. This, coupled with the onset of fog, prompted a delay in the race start. Although the fog eventually cleared, the rain intensified significantly, ultimately leading to the decision to cancel after a meeting with the teams.

Qualifying Highlights and Championship Implications

During the preceding day's qualifying session, Ayumu Iwasa achieved pole position, surpassing championship leader Kakunoshin Ohta. This impressive performance in the five-car Q3 shootout not only earned Iwasa a significant prize but also awarded him three bonus points, narrowing Ohta's lead in the championship standings to 19.5 points. The current grid order from qualifying would be maintained if a replacement race is indeed held.
