Calculating bond yields can range from straightforward methods, such as the coupon yield, to more sophisticated approaches like current yield, yield to maturity (YTM), bond equivalent yield (BEY), and effective annual yield (EAY). Each method offers a different perspective on the bond's profitability and risk. For instance, the coupon yield is simply the annual coupon payment divided by the bond's face value, providing a basic measure of return. The current yield, however, accounts for the bond's current market price, offering a more realistic picture of the return an investor would receive if they purchased the bond today.

A bond is essentially a debt instrument, representing a loan made by an investor to a borrower, typically a corporation or government entity. Another important measure is the bond equivalent yield (BEY), which annualizes a bond's semi-annual coupon payments to make them comparable to annually paid instruments. However, BEY does not fully account for the compounding effect of semi-annual payments. For a more precise annual yield, especially with semi-annual payments, the effective annual yield (EAY) is employed, which considers the effect of compounding, resulting in a slightly higher yield than the BEY.

The relationship between bond price and yield is fundamentally inverse. When bond prices increase, their yields decrease, and vice versa. This dynamic is primarily driven by changes in prevailing interest rates. For instance, if interest rates rise, newly issued bonds offer higher coupon payments, making existing bonds with lower coupon rates less attractive. To sell these older bonds, their price must be lowered, thereby increasing their effective yield to compete with new issues. Conversely, if interest rates fall, older bonds with higher coupon rates become more appealing, driving up their market price and reducing their yield for new buyers. Precise yield calculation can be challenging due to factors such as fractional periods to maturity and accrued interest. A bond's price may be quoted as a "clean price," excluding accrued interest, or a "dirty price," including it.
