Sublime, with Jakob Nowell, the son of their late frontman Bradley Nowell, has recently dropped a fresh single titled 'Ensenada,' which impressively recaptures the band's distinctive Nineties sonic identity. This release precedes a full-length album, expected in December, marking a significant new chapter for the group. While Jakob initially envisioned his involvement as strictly a touring role, the creative process of crafting new songs, especially by incorporating his father's previously unheard vocals, transformed his perspective. The forthcoming record will feature collaborations with several renowned musicians, promising a diverse and authentic musical experience for long-time fans and new listeners alike.
When Jakob Nowell first aligned with the re-formed Sublime, featuring original members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson, his intent was solely to honor his father's legacy through live performances, carefully safeguarding the existing catalog. He articulated a deep reverence for Sublime's original works, expressing a strong desire to avoid any missteps that could tarnish their revered discography. However, a pivotal shift occurred when he began experimenting in the studio, layering his own vocals with unreleased recordings of his father. This deeply moving experience fostered an unexpected creative drive, leading to the band's first new offering, 'Feel Like That,' released last May, which built upon an unfinished composition by Bradley Nowell.
The newest single, 'Ensenada,' stands as a testament to this evolving creative synergy. Unlike their previous work, this track is completely original, showcasing a genuine continuation of Sublime’s signature sound, complete with their characteristic DJ scratching. Bud Gaugh, the band’s drummer, lauded the song’s immediate appeal, noting its seamless fit within their past albums. He attributed this success to the natural camaraderie within the group, emphasizing the authentic, familial bond they share. This profound connection transports them back to their formative years, reinforcing the genuine spirit of Sublime’s music.
'Ensenada' was not a product of reinterpreting old material or fragmented ideas; instead, it emerged from a fresh creative impulse. However, its distinct reggae rhythm serves as a deliberate nod to a 1996 video bootleg, affectionately known by fans as 'Mexico Shithole.' This video greatly influenced the band's musical direction for the track, guiding them towards its specific atmospheric vibe.
The ensemble is nearing completion of their upcoming album, which is slated for a December release. This new collection will boast guest appearances from prominent figures in music, including Fletcher Dragge of Pennywise, Zac Carper from Fidlar, and Paul “HR” Hudson of Bad Brains. While Jakob previously engaged in writing sessions with notable producers Travis Barker and John Feldmann, he clarified that none of those collaborations would be featured on this album. Instead, the current project was developed in close collaboration with Jakob’s long-standing partner Zane Vandevort and producer John Joseph. Gaugh further assured enthusiasts that the album would delve into Sublime’s punk influences, extending beyond the reggae sound that has been prominent in their recent singles.
Looking ahead, Jakob Nowell has conveyed that this forthcoming album will likely be his final contribution to Sublime, viewing it as the culmination of a significant personal journey. He anticipates a demanding two-year touring schedule to support the release, after which he plans to reduce his involvement with Sublime. His future endeavors include focusing on his solo musical career and expanding his emerging record label, Svn/Bvrnt Records, with the aim of nurturing new artists who uphold the spirit and traditions of Sublime's distinctive sound.
The band is also preparing for a significant homecoming performance at the Warped Tour on July 26 in Long Beach, California. Gaugh expressed excitement for the event, anticipating an overwhelming display of support from friends, family, and fans. This performance is expected to be a heartfelt moment for the band, celebrating their enduring connection with their audience and their shared musical heritage.
