Collaborations with renowned artists such as Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Killer Mike, Little Dragon's Yukimi, Common, Nas, and The Roots' Black Thought promise a rich and diverse listening experience. The lead single, "The Package," produced by Pete Rock, offers a taste of the album's introspective yet vibrant sound.

Hip-Hop Legends De La Soul Honor Trugoy's Legacy with Emotional New Album

In a deeply moving announcement, legendary hip-hop group De La Soul has revealed details about their upcoming album, "Cabin in the Sky," slated for release on November 21. This album marks their first major project since the passing of beloved member David Jude Jolicoeur, affectionately known as Trugoy, in 2023. Released through Mass Appeal, the 20-track collection is a heartfelt tribute to Trugoy's enduring spirit and musical contributions.

The album's lead single, "The Package," produced by the esteemed Pete Rock, sets the tone for a project rich in collaboration and emotional resonance. Other notable contributors include producers DJ Premier and Super Dave, alongside guest artists Killer Mike, Yukimi from Little Dragon, Common, Nas, and Black Thought of The Roots.

Posdnuos, a member of De La Soul, articulated the album's core essence in a recent press statement, describing "Cabin in the Sky" as an exploration of "loss and light." He explained, "It’s about the pain we carry and the joy that somehow still finds us. This album is therapy and celebration at the same time." He emphasized the vulnerability embedded within the songs, reflecting on the journey that led them to this moment—honoring what has been lost while uplifting what remains. "That duality. That’s life, and that’s De La," he concluded.

Posdnuos further elaborated to Pitchfork that he and Maseo began conceptualizing "Cabin in the Sky" in February 2025 after Mass Appeal's Peter Bittenbender proposed their involvement in the label's "Legend Has It" initiative. He noted that they incorporated existing music featuring Dave's vocals, such as "Good Health" (produced by Supa Dave West) and "The Package" (by Pete Rock), originally intended for a project titled "Premium Soul on the Rocks." Another track, "Pattycake," produced by Jake One, also found its place.

"It was my mission to ensure that Dave's true energy was palpable throughout the entire record," Posdnuos affirmed. He recounted how Trugoy's voice repeating "Ya don’t stop" on a beat he created during the pandemic inspired the album's opening track. Posdnuos extended this piece, weaving Dave's voice throughout, making it the "heartbeat" and "motivation" for the album's continuation. Trugoy's production work also extends to another track featuring a sample from Roy Ayers' "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" and the album's closing song, "Don’t Push Me," ensuring his musical imprint is deeply felt.

"Cabin in the Sky" is part of Mass Appeal's broader series celebrating New York hip-hop giants, a campaign that has previously yielded new albums from artists like Slick Rick, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Mobb Deep, and the late Big L. The label is reportedly planning a future collaboration between Nas and DJ Premier.

The announcement of "Cabin in the Sky" serves as a powerful testament to the resilience and creative spirit of De La Soul. It underscores the profound impact Trugoy had on his bandmates and the music world, demonstrating how art can serve as a vessel for both grief and gratitude. This album promises to be a deeply personal and meaningful addition to their storied discography, reminding listeners that even in loss, there is an enduring legacy of light and sound.
