Legendary band Talking Heads is gearing up to unveil a special compilation album, titled 'Tentative Decisions', exclusively for Record Store Day’s upcoming Black Friday event in 2025. This highly anticipated collection promises a deep dive into the group's formative years, bringing together a fascinating array of early demo recordings that laid the groundwork for their critically acclaimed first two studio albums. Alongside these foundational tracks, the compilation will also feature a vibrant live performance and selections from The Artistics, the band that predated Talking Heads, offering fans a comprehensive glimpse into their musical evolution.

The 'Tentative Decisions' compilation is a treasure trove for enthusiasts, containing preliminary versions of songs that would later become staples on 'Talking Heads: 77' (released in 1977) and 'More Songs About Buildings and Food' (from 1978). Among these historical recordings, listeners will discover a live rendition of "Artists Only," captured during a memorable performance at the Ocean Club in Lower Manhattan. Adding to the collection's unique appeal are early interpretations of iconic tracks such as "Psycho Killer" and "Warning Sign," credited to David Byrne and Chris Frantz's initial musical project, The Artistics. This compilation serves as an essential auditory journey through the origins of one of music's most influential bands.

Scheduled for an exclusive release at participating independent record stores, 'Tentative Decisions' will be available to the public starting Friday, November 28. This release builds on a year of celebration for Talking Heads, who marked their 50th anniversary. Earlier in the year, the band delighted fans with a new music video for "Psycho Killer," directed by Mike Mills and featuring actress Saoirse Ronan, further cementing their enduring cultural impact. Additionally, 2024 saw the reissue of their seminal debut album, 'Talking Heads: 77', showcasing the timeless quality of their early work and reaffirming their legacy in contemporary music.

The tracklist for 'Tentative Decisions: Demos & Live' offers a detailed look at the unearthed material, beginning with several September 1975 demos including "Psycho Killer," "Tentative Decisions," "No Compassion," "Warning Sign," and "I’m Not in Love." The album continues with 1976 demos of "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel," "The Book I Read," "I Wish You Wouldn’t Say That," "Love Goes to a Building on Fire," and "Happy Day." The compilation is rounded out by the live recording of "Artists Only" from the Ocean Club on August 17, 1976, and two tracks by The Artistics: "Psycho Killer" and "Warning Sign."

This compilation provides an unparalleled opportunity for fans and music historians alike to explore the creative process and foundational sounds of Talking Heads. It underscores the band's innovative spirit and the evolution of their distinctive style, offering raw and intimate perspectives on tracks that would eventually define their genre-bending career. The album is a testament to their early experimentation and the visionary spark that fueled their rise to prominence, making it a pivotal addition to any music collection.
